Before the Fence

Little girl climbing a ladder over a wooden fence labeled with childhood emotional wounds. Dry, barren ground gives way to a green, hopeful landscape representing healing, freedom, and possibility.

Wholesome Badass blog and avatar emerged when I first engaged a therapist to support me with inner child and mother wound healing work. With Mari Andrew as my inspo, Wholesome Badass Girl came to life to help me along my healing journey.

Not necessarily a girl I looked like. Wholesome Badass is considerably cuter and more symmetrical than I am—or ever was.

Just a representation of my littlest me, before I learned all the things that would teach me to fear life and what to expect from the world and the people around me.

I see Lil Baby Magda as a little wild animal who needed and deserved encouragement, nourishing guidance, and care, probably more than reduction, fencing in, or casting out.

Woman in therapy asks whether being difficult, uncomfortable, inconvenient, or peculiar cost her every bit of love in her life.
When discomfort, difference, and unmet expectations are punished, a child feels erased and learns to hate herself.
