Trauma is an experience that overwhelms our capacity to process and integrate what is happening.
When you are raised having your words and feelings ignored, dismissed, challenged and twisted to be used against you, you may, as I did, dedicate much time to seeking the exact right words (once realizing volume and profanity do not work in your favor, ever) to express a thing so that you may be heard. With active substance abuse and addiction, running in all directions of our family tree, we get to have many discussions on this matter.
